Senegal’s president launches new party, signaling political shift
In a bold political move, Senegalese President Bassirou Diomaye Faye has officially inaugurated his new political party, Kiiraay, in a ceremony held in Dakar. The launch marks a definitive break with his former mentor and ex-Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko, with whom he had previously joined forces to secure victory in the 2024 elections.
Kiiraay: A party rooted in republican values
Kiiraay, which translates to “protection” or “shield” in Wolof, was unveiled as the party of the “Republican Patriots.” The movement positions itself on the pillars of the Republic, ethics, transparency, fraternity, and diligence. Addressing a crowd of several hundred supporters in Dakar, President Faye declared that Kiiraay is destined to become the country’s dominant political force. Already, a wave of elected officials and political figures has defected from the Pastef to join the president’s new movement.
A rift that has reached its conclusion
The establishment of Kiiraay closes a prolonged chapter of discord between Bassirou Diomaye Faye and Ousmane Sonko. After initially appointing Sonko as Prime Minister, the president dismissed him in May following deepening political and economic disagreements. Despite his removal, Sonko retains his role as Speaker of the National Assembly and continues to lead the Pastef, which still commands a strong majority in Parliament.
