Ousmane Sonko launched a political tour last Saturday, stopping first in Bargny before moving on to Sébikotane, Khombole, and Bambey. The Pastef leader left Keur Gorgui to meet with grassroots activists and strengthen momentum for the party’s membership card sales campaign.

In Bargny, he was met by throngs of enthusiastic supporters and political figures. Addressing the crowd, the former Prime Minister emphasized that his visit aimed to bolster this critical campaign, which he sees as pivotal for the party’s future. « I came to encourage members to sell membership cards. I shouldn’t even be speaking right now, » he said, urging local leaders and activists to fully commit to the initiative.

For Sonko, this campaign is a cornerstone for upcoming elections. He pointed to the strong turnout in Bargny as proof of the party’s deep roots in the community. « Selling these cards will shape the next elections, » he declared, underscoring the campaign’s strategic importance.

He also reflected on the hardships endured by Bargny’s residents under the previous administration, expressing solidarity with their struggles. « I’ve seen what you’ve been through—the victims under Macky Sall’s rule. I want Bargny to know I haven’t forgotten your fight, » he told the crowd.

Addressing Pastef’s political challenges

Sonko acknowledged the hurdles facing Pastef’s political project, citing accountability, political violence, and development as key concerns. « We still lack the tools to match our ambitions, » he admitted, while reaffirming confidence in the party’s progress since taking office.

He called on activists to remain calm and disciplined amid rising tensions, stressing that the membership drive is vital for solidifying the party’s vision. « We’re 80% of the way to our goal, with 20% remaining—including the membership card sales, » he concluded, urging continued mobilization despite provocations.
