The Chadian government has extended a formal apology to magistrates, marking a pivotal moment in restoring institutional harmony following an extraordinary general assembly of the Syndicat des Magistrats Tchadiens (SMT) and Syndicat Autonome des Magistrats Tchadiens (SYAMAT).
On May 26, 2026, delegates from both judicial unions convened at the Palais de Justice in N’Djamena for a landmark meeting. Empowered by their members, they were tasked with overseeing the implementation of resolutions over the subsequent ten-day period.
Later that day, the Prime Minister met with the union representatives, joined by the Minister of Justice and Human Rights and the First President of the Supreme Court. During the session, the Prime Minister conveyed the government’s formal apology and emphasized the need for strengthened collaboration between state institutions.
The following day, May 27, 2026, the magistrates’ unions engaged in separate discussions with the Minister of Justice and Human Rights. They then held joint talks with the Minister of Public Security and Immigration, with the First President of the Supreme Court present throughout. These conversations aimed to foster a peaceful and mutually agreeable resolution.
The Minister of Public Security also reiterated the government’s official apology to the magistrates. Recognizing these gestures, the unions acknowledged the sincere efforts toward dialogue and conflict resolution made by the officials involved.
