The Bureau of the UNESCO in Mali took center stage at a landmark event, joining the 16th edition of the Inter-School Excellence Competition held at the École Nationale d’Ingénieurs Abderhamane Baba Touré (ENI-ABT). This gathering brought together students, educators, academic leaders, and partners to celebrate and foster excellence in science and innovation among Malian youth.
The ceremony, held on July 4, 2026, was a vibrant showcase of young talent, highlighting the critical role of education in driving progress. Dr. Kélétigui Daou, Director-General of ENI-ABT, opened the event with gratitude to UNESCO for its involvement, praising the organization’s unwavering commitment to advancing education in Mali.
In his address, Dr. Daou emphasized UNESCO’s initiatives to boost girls’ participation in STEM fields—Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics—as well as its efforts to cultivate scientific research and innovation among youth. These programs are seen as vital for empowering the next generation of problem-solvers in Mali.
Celebrating merit and fostering future leaders
The event also featured a keynote from the Secretary-General of the ENI-ABT UNESCO Club, who underscored the importance of this 16th edition in rewarding academic excellence and nurturing civic values. The Club plays a pivotal role in promoting peace, citizenship, and sustainable development through educational initiatives.
Oumou Dicko, UNESCO Mali’s Science Program Officer, congratulated the organizers and students for their dedication. She outlined the numerous opportunities offered by UNESCO, including scholarships, mentorship programs, and participation in international observances. Her message was clear: investing in science and innovation is key to Mali’s future growth.
Inspiring the next generation of scientists and innovators
This competition is more than a contest—it’s a platform for young Malian minds to shine. By recognizing outstanding achievements in science and technology, UNESCO and ENI-ABT are nurturing a culture of excellence that will help address the country’s challenges and propel it forward.
From fostering gender equality in STEM to encouraging research and innovation, the event reflects a shared vision: a Mali where every young person has the tools to succeed and contribute to national development.
