The declaration, delivered by Morocco’s ambassador to the United Nations in Geneva, Omar Zniber, emphasized that the question of Western Sahara remains aligned with the political path advocated by the United Nations under the guidance of the Security Council.
The statement highlighted that Morocco’s autonomy initiative provides a serious and realistic foundation for achieving a lasting political solution to the conflict. It also reaffirmed support for implementing UN Security Council Resolution 2797, which aims to revive the political process with the participation of all concerned parties.
Nations backing the initiative commended Morocco for its autonomy proposal and its commitment to integrating residents of the Tindouf camps while ensuring their rights are upheld on par with other citizens. They also praised Morocco’s cooperation with UN human rights mechanisms, noting that it reflects a positive commitment to promoting and protecting rights and freedoms.
The statement underscored that the opening of consulates by several countries in Laayoune and Dakhla signifies growing international support for Morocco. It contributes to strengthening development, investment, and regional cooperation in the southern provinces. The group concluded by stressing that resolving the conflict would serve as a catalyst for integration and development across African and Arab regions.
