The donation of a new power plant from Algeria to the Republic of Chad represents a significant advancement in the diplomatic and economic ties between Algiers and N’Djamena.

On Monday in N’Djamena, Prime Minister Sifi Ghrieb joined his Chadian counterpart, Prime Minister Allamaye Halina, to lead the foundation stone-laying ceremony for this collaborative energy project. The facility is designed to have a production capacity of 40 megawatts, serving as a symbol of Algerian-Chadian solidarity.

Sonelgaz International to lead construction efforts

This initiative marks a fresh chapter in the strengthening of bilateral relations, following the strategic directives set by President Abdelmadjid Tebboune. The event opened with a comprehensive technical presentation detailing the project’s engineering specifications, the various phases of development, and the future operational roadmap. The presentation highlighted how critical this infrastructure is for the energy cooperation framework between the two nations.

Under the supervision of the Ministry of Energy and Renewable Energies, the project’s execution has been assigned to Sonelgaz International, a subsidiary of the Sonelgaz Group. Equipped with high-efficiency gas turbines, the plant is intended to meet the rising electricity needs of the capital, N’Djamena, and its surrounding areas, thereby improving energy security. Representing the Algerian head of state, Prime Minister Sifi Ghrieb emphasized the strategic importance of this plant, noting it is one of the first tangible results of the commitments made by the leaders of both countries.

Building a robust strategic alliance

During his speech, Ghrieb underscored the high priority President Tebboune places on fostering cooperation and solidarity with fellow African nations. He noted the President’s personal commitment to supporting Chad’s development goals, particularly in vital sectors that directly improve the daily lives of its citizens. This project, he explained, “is a manifestation of the firm political will shared by our leaders” and aims to elevate Algerian-Chadian relations “to the level of a solid strategic partnership rooted in effective solidarity and mutual benefit.”

“President Abdelmadjid Tebboune remains dedicated to deepening the fraternal bonds between our peoples,” Ghrieb stated, adding that such collaboration is essential for creating “a more integrated and prosperous African space.” He described the power plant as a direct outcome of the momentum generated during the Chadian President’s official visit to Algeria in April 2026. This visit led to ambitious cooperation programs across several key sectors.

Regional stability through shared cooperation

The Prime Minister also highlighted the broader continental significance of the initiative. “This project is born from Algeria’s deep-seated belief that effective African cooperation can drive shared development through concrete actions that benefit the population,” he remarked. He further noted that the vision for the continent involves active solidarity, productive investments, and partnerships that generate wealth for all African people.

This energy project is part of a larger strategy for continental integration. Sifi Ghrieb pointed out that Algeria and Chad are prioritizing major structural projects, such as the Trans-Saharan road, fiber optic interconnections, and the enhancement of air transport and logistics. These efforts are designed to connect inland regions and create new avenues for trade and investment.

Promoting African-led solutions

Turning to regional matters, the Prime Minister reaffirmed the shared perspectives of Algiers and N’Djamena. “We are committed to maintaining close coordination on regional and continental issues,” he assured the audience. He emphasized that this approach reflects a common belief in a shared destiny and the importance of finding African solutions to African challenges while respecting national sovereignty.

In closing, Ghrieb reiterated Algeria’s ongoing support for Chad’s growth. “On behalf of President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, I reaffirm Algeria’s steadfast commitment to assisting the Republic of Chad and strengthening our bilateral partnership to ensure stability and prosperity for both our nations,” he concluded.
