Algeria is further cementing its role as a key partner in African development through significant energy infrastructure projects. In a major step for bilateral relations, Prime Minister Sifi Ghrieb joined Chadian Prime Minister Allamaye Halina in N’Djamena on Monday to lay the foundation stone for a new 40-megawatt power plant.

Strengthening energy security in Chad

This initiative follows the recent inauguration of another 40 MW solidarity power plant in Niamey, Niger, located at the Gorou Banda site. These facilities are provided as donations from Algeria, reflecting a strategic shift from supporting decolonization to fostering modern economic and social advancement across the continent. By addressing energy deficits, Algeria aims to help neighboring nations overcome the challenges posed by unequal international relations and neo-colonial legacies.

The Algerian Agency for International Cooperation for Solidarity and Development (AICA) serves as the primary vehicle for these efforts, operating with a substantial budget of one billion dollars dedicated to African development projects. During the ceremony, Sifi Ghrieb reaffirmed Algeria’s commitment to supporting Chad’s growth through the transfer of technical expertise and capacity building in sectors such as energy, mining, and industrial infrastructure.

A strategic partnership for regional prosperity

The 40 MW plant is more than just an infrastructure project; it represents a deep social and economic investment designed to bolster Chad’s energy capabilities. According to the Prime Minister, the project is a direct result of the political will shared by President Abdelmadjid Tebboune and President Mahamat Idriss Déby Itno. Their goal is to elevate the relationship between Algeria and Chad into a robust strategic partnership based on mutual interests and active solidarity.

  • Capacity: 40 megawatts
  • Location: N’Djamena, Chad
  • Objective: Strengthening regional integration and energy autonomy

This new momentum in cooperation was catalyzed by the official visit of Marshal Mahamat Idriss Déby Itno to Algeria in April 2026. During that visit, high-level discussions with President Tebboune led to several ambitious agreements across vital sectors. In addition to the groundbreaking ceremony, Sifi Ghrieb was received by the Chadian President to further discuss enhancing the fraternal bonds and expanding the collaborative framework between the two nations.
