Arsenal closes in on Premier League title with Burnley victory

A decisive Kai Havertz header from a corner secured Arsenal’s 1-0 win over Burnley, keeping their Premier League title hopes alive. The Gunners now await Manchester City’s result at Bournemouth to potentially clinch the championship.

The pressure was on, and Arsenal knew it. Facing a Burnley side desperately fighting relegation, the Gunners couldn’t afford anything but victory. A draw or loss would have left them at the mercy of Manchester City, who were just two points behind before the match. Mikel Arteta’s men delivered precisely what was needed.

The breakthrough came in the 37th minute, when Kai Havertz rose highest to power a header past Burnley goalkeeper Max Weiss from a Bukayo Saka corner. The goal was Arsenal’s 18th from a set-piece this season—a testament to their aerial dominance in the Premier League.

Arsenal controlled the game, dominating possession at 62% to Burnley’s 38%, though they struggled to create clear chances. Havertz nearly saw red in the 69th minute after a reckless challenge on Lesley Ugochukwu, but escaped with a yellow.

With the three points secured, Arsenal remain top of the table and on course for their first league title since 2004. They could be crowned champions as early as Tuesday evening, should Manchester City fail to win at Bournemouth (kick-off at 20:30). The focus now shifts to the Champions League final against PSG in Budapest on May 30, just six days away.
