Dakar has reached a pivotal agreement with the International Monetary Fund (IMF), paving the way for a substantial financial package amounting to 2.2 billion dollars. This significant development comes as the Senegalese government, led by President Bassirou Diomaye Faye, has formally committed to an extensive restructuring of its national debt.

The landmark decision by the IMF underscores a renewed partnership aimed at bolstering Senegal’s economic stability and fiscal health. Discussions culminating in this agreement involved key stakeholders, including President Faye and Mercedes Vera Martin, the IMF Mission Chief for Senegal. Their engagement in Dakar on January 21, 2026, marked a crucial step towards solidifying the terms of this financial collaboration.

Central to the agreement is Senegal’s pledge to address its financial obligations, particularly in light of concerns surrounding what has been referred to as “hidden debt.” This commitment to transparency and fiscal reform is expected to underpin the nation’s efforts to enhance its economic resilience and ensure sustainable growth.

The debt restructuring initiative is anticipated to provide Senegal with the necessary flexibility to manage its finances more effectively, fostering an environment conducive to long-term economic prosperity and development.
