Arsenal stands on the brink of ending their 22-year wait for a Premier League title, but a shock exit could follow the celebrations. According to former Gunners defender Mikaël Silvestre, one of the club’s longest-serving players may consider leaving this summer, viewing a title triumph as the perfect moment to bid farewell.
With just two matches remaining in the season, Arsenal top the table, two points clear of Manchester City. Victory against Burnley and Crystal Palace would secure their first league crown since 2004 and hand Mikel Arteta the chance to become the first manager since Arsène Wenger to lift the trophy. Meanwhile, City face a tough final stretch, needing to overcome a resurgent Bournemouth and Aston Villa, European finalists, to retain their crown.
Regardless of whether Arsenal claim both the Premier League and Champions League—potentially facing Paris Saint-Germain in the final—their hierarchy is expected to strengthen Arteta’s squad this summer.
Martinelli’s limited minutes spark exit talks
Gabriel Martinelli, Arsenal’s most capped player with nearly 300 appearances since his 2019 debut, has seen his role reduced this season. The Brazilian international, with over 100 games in his last two campaigns, has started just ten league matches, often deployed as a substitute. His frustration over limited playing time has raised concerns, with Silvestre suggesting the Brazilian could force a transfer if Arsenal win the league.
“Martinelli is an international who wants to play regularly,” Silvestre explained. “Leandro Trossard currently has more game time, and after such a long spell at the club, he may seek opportunities elsewhere. Winning the title would be the ideal moment for him to leave—if he finds the right club. Arsenal would then need to bring in a replacement.”
Arsenal eye Barcola as potential replacement
As discussions over Martinelli’s future intensify, Arsenal have reportedly turned their attention to Paris Saint-Germain winger Bradley Barcola. The young French attacker could step into Martinelli’s role if the Brazilian departs, though Silvestre believes Barcola still requires refinement.
“Barcola has the potential to challenge Trossard for a starting spot,” Silvestre noted. “He’s already impressive in duels, space creation, and key passes but needs to improve his finishing. Once that clicks, he’ll become a complete player. Right now, he’s not yet a Champions League starter, but his qualities are undeniable.”
