On June 6, 2026, Bamako became the center of environmental action as the 27th edition of the Environment Fortnight officially kicked off. The UNESCO delegation, led by Representative Ali Mohamed Sinane, joined high-level officials to advocate for the protection of natural heritage and the promotion of ecological awareness.

The opening ceremony was presided over by the Minister of State and Minister of Economy and Finances, Alousséni Sanou, who represented the Prime Minister. The event saw a significant gathering of regional leaders, including environmental ministers from the Confederation of Sahel States (AES), specifically from Burkina Faso and Niger. They were joined by technical partners, members of civil society, and representatives from the private sector.

Unifying efforts for natural resource preservation

This 27th edition is designed to harmonize national initiatives and strengthen community engagement. The primary objective is to sensitize the population on the critical need to preserve natural resources while fostering sustainable environmental habits across Mali.

Scheduled to run from June 5 to June 15, 2026, the program is structured around two essential pillars:

  • Climate crisis and resilient solutions: This theme aligns with World Environment Day, focusing on building a safer and more sustainable future.
  • Pastures and land restoration: In observance of the International Day to Combat Desertification and Drought, this theme emphasizes the need to recognize, respect, and restore vital grazing lands.

A commitment to sustainable development

Through its active participation, UNESCO reaffirms its dedicated support for the Malian government. The organization remains committed to promoting best practices and implementing concrete actions that ensure long-term resilience and sustainable development for all communities in the region.
