In Senegal, President Bassirou Diomaye Faye is set to establish his own political party, marking a definitive split from his former ally, Ousmane Sonko, and the ruling Pastef party. This move underscores a growing political divide within the country’s leadership.

The initiative is spearheaded by Aminata Touré, Senior Advisor to the President, who is assembling a dedicated task force to formalize the new party’s structure and vision.

Until recently, Bassirou Diomaye Faye was a key member of Pastef, the party led by Ousmane Sonko, who previously served as Prime Minister. However, their partnership unraveled in May following prolonged disagreements and indirect political clashes, culminating in his removal from office.

These political shifts unfold against the backdrop of Senegal’s ongoing struggle to address a financial crisis triggered by undisclosed debt from the previous administration. The coming months will be critical as both leaders prepare for the 2027 local elections, which will serve as a litmus test for public support amid their now-fractured alliance.
