Cameroon’s opposition leader Joshua Osih is demanding strict adherence to the electoral calendar.

During a July 23 press conference, the SDF president urged the ruling RDPC government to uphold the electoral timeline without delay. To pressure the regime into holding elections as scheduled, he called on all opposition parties, regardless of ideological differences, to form a united front.

«The elections must proceed on time. No further postponements. The electoral calendar belongs to the people, not the government. I call on all opposition forces to establish a Common Front to enforce this right,» Osih declared.

So far, his appeal has not elicited any response from opposition leaders.

Osih’s demand comes just months after municipal and legislative elections were postponed. The government cited financial, logistical, and security constraints, along with electoral calendar adjustments, to justify the delay. The legislative bill was approved by the National Assembly, and a decree signed by President Paul Biya took effect in June 2026, extending mandates until February 2027.

The government has defended the delays by citing financial constraints, logistical challenges, and security concerns, as well as the need to reorganize the election schedule.
