Yopougon hosts groundbreaking national week to honor women’s contributions
In a historic move ahead of Côte d’Ivoire’s 66th independence anniversary, the Femme Ivoirienne en Politique (FIP) organization launched the country’s first-ever National Week of Women Builders of the Nation on July 30 at the Yopougon town hall. The four-day event, scheduled for August 1–4, 2026, will serve as a platform to reflect on women’s achievements and chart a path forward for gender equality.
The initiative, themed « 66 years of Ivorian independence: women’s gains and future outlook », aims to spotlight the pivotal role women have played in shaping the nation’s political, economic, social, and cultural landscape. It will also provide a structured opportunity to assess ongoing challenges and propose actionable policies to address them.
Key activities and objectives
According to FIP President Rebecca Yao, the week-long program is designed to evaluate progress since independence, gather critical input from women across sectors, and develop recommendations to strengthen public policies. « This is a moment to pause and reflect on how far we’ve come, identify persistent obstacles, and outline solutions that will drive meaningful change, » she explained.
The agenda for August 1–3 at the Yopougon town hall includes a high-level national symposium featuring an opening panel and sixteen thematic sessions. These discussions will cover critical areas such as female leadership, health, education, economic empowerment, youth engagement, and women’s rights. An accompanying exhibition will showcase the inspiring journeys of trailblazing Ivorian women alongside successful female-led entrepreneurship projects.
All findings and recommendations from the symposium will be compiled into a white paper and submitted to relevant authorities to ensure accountability and follow-up action.
A gala celebration to honor 66 pioneers
The culminating event on August 4 at the Sofitel Hôtel Ivoire will be a gala dinner celebrating 66 women who have made significant contributions to Côte d’Ivoire’s development since 1960. This tribute underscores the nation’s commitment to recognizing the indispensable role of women in its progress.
Rebecca Yao emphasized the long-term vision of this initiative, stating, « This will not be a one-time event. Each year, we will revisit the resolutions from the previous edition to track progress and ensure that commitments translate into tangible results. »
Strong local support for the initiative
Yopougon’s Member of Parliament, Mireille Bamba, praised the initiative, reaffirming the backing of Mayor Adama Bictogo. Organizers envision this week as an annual platform for dialogue, reflection, and public recognition of women’s contributions to nation-building.
