Following Ousmane Sonko’s direct appeal to President Bassirou Diomaye Faye regarding the necessity of setting an election date, Deputy El Malick Ndiaye has now articulated an equally firm stance on the matter.
While hosting Ousmane Sonko in Linguère as part of Pastef’s national tour for membership card sales, the parliamentary representative asserted that any deferral of these crucial elections should be entirely out of the question.
“Our membership card sales operations are energizing the country in a positive way. Across the nation, people are eager to acquire Pastef membership cards. This widespread engagement could very well influence the timing of the forthcoming elections,” he stated.
The former National Assembly president, however, remained unequivocal regarding the actual conduct of the ballot.
“But these elections, no one can postpone them. ‘Beug beuré, bagn beuré’ (there will be a fight, whether they want it or not),” he warned, emphasizing the inevitability of the vote.
The Pastef leader had similarly urged the head of state to issue a decree to establish the date for the next local elections, underscoring that such a decision falls squarely within the president’s constitutional powers.
“Issuing a decree to dismiss Fadilou Keïta, Waly Diouf Bodiang, and others is within his prerogatives; no one disputes that. In the same vein, he must issue a decree to set the election date. These are all simply decrees,” Sonko had explained.
