The family of Cameroon’s former Supreme Court President has announced the full funeral program.

The late Alexis Dipanda Mouelle, who presided over the highest judicial body from 1990 to 2014, will be laid to rest from June 22 to 27, 2026. The schedule was published by his family.

Between June 22 and June 24, daily prayer sessions will be held at the family home in the Bastos district of Yaoundé, Cameroon’s political capital. These will take place from 6:00 PM to 7:00 PM each evening. On June 25 at 10:00 AM, his body will be removed from the Yaoundé General Hospital morgue, followed by official tributes at the Supreme Court.

Bonakou-Bwapaki

At 3:00 PM on June 25, a memorial mass will be celebrated at the Basilica of Mary Queen of the Apostles in Mvolye. The day will conclude with a candlelight vigil at the family home. On June 26, the funeral procession will depart for Bonakou-Bwapaki, with a stop at the family compound in Bonakouamouang near Akwa in Douala, where another vigil will be held. The final burial will take place on June 27, 2026, in his hometown.

Alexis Dipanda Mouelle, born on March 25, 1942, in Bonakou-Bwapaki (Littoral region), passed away on May 4, 2026, at the age of 84. He leaves behind a distinguished career in Cameroon’s judicial and political spheres.

Daniel Mekobe Sone

After studying at the University of Paris, he joined Cameroon’s judiciary in 1965. He steadily climbed the ranks, serving as Secretary-General of the Ministry of Justice in 1975 before becoming President of the Supreme Court in 1986. He held this position for 24 years until his retirement on December 31, 2014, when he was succeeded by Daniel Mekobe Sone.

His tenure is notably tied to the certification of the 1992 presidential election results. As head of the Supreme Court, he declared Paul Biya the winner with 39.98% of the vote, narrowly defeating opposition leader Ni John Fru Ndi, who garnered 35.9%. This decision sparked significant controversy amid the return to multiparty politics.

International contributions

Beyond Cameroon, Dipanda Mouelle served as President of the 17th session of the United Nations Committee against Torture, was a member of the Arbitration Chamber of the International Court of Justice in The Hague, and a member of the International Institute of French-Speaking Law (IDEF).
