The President of Gabon, Brice Clotaire Oligui Nguema, welcomed Sidi Ould Tah, President of the African Development Bank (AfDB), in Libreville to discuss strengthening the partnership between the pan-African institution and the Gabonese government.
During the meeting, accompanied by the AfDB’s resident representative in Gabon, Nouredine Kane Dia, the two leaders reviewed the current portfolio of AfDB-funded initiatives in the country. They also discussed Gabon’s key development priorities as outlined by the head of state, including critical sectors such as water and electricity supply, as well as agricultural expansion.
Water and electricity: a top priority for Gabon
The Gabonese government highlighted the urgent need to improve access to water and electricity, particularly in Libreville and other urban centers. The AfDB has pledged its support for large-scale infrastructure projects, including those managed by the Gabonese Energy and Water Company, with a focus on boosting water supply from the Komo River.
The AfDB has already made significant strides in this area. Through a 200 million Unit of Account loan—equivalent to approximately 75 billion Central African francs—it financed the Integrated Program for Drinking Water Supply and Sanitation in Libreville (PIAEPAL). This initiative aimed to modernize and expand the capital’s water network, which had deteriorated over nearly a decade. Key achievements included the rehabilitation of 310 kilometers of pipelines, the installation of 21,000 water meters, and the construction or renovation of storage tanks in Ntoum, Bikélé-Nzong, Alénakiri, and Sotega.
Agriculture: a strategic sector for food self-sufficiency
Beyond infrastructure, President Oligui Nguema emphasized the importance of agriculture as a driver of economic growth and a means to reduce food imports. The AfDB’s engagement in this sector aligns with the government’s broader vision to enhance food security and create sustainable livelihoods for Gabonese citizens.
Strengthening collaboration for socio-economic impact
Following the discussions, both parties reaffirmed their commitment to prioritizing projects that deliver tangible socio-economic benefits. These efforts will be aligned with the national development agenda outlined in the President’s flagship societal project, which has guided policy since his assumption of office.
The AfDB remains one of Gabon’s leading multilateral partners, actively financing initiatives across infrastructure, energy, and agriculture—sectors critical to the nation’s progress.
