Strategic partnership between Gabon and Togo constitutional courts
The Constitutional Courts of Gabon and Togo are entering a new era of collaboration, focused on pooling resources and exchanging legal expertise. The presidents of these two high judicial bodies, Dieudonné Aba’a Owono and Professor Djobo-Babakane Coulibaley, established the framework for this partnership during a high-level meeting at the Palais de la Constitution. This gathering followed the arrival of a Togolese delegation in Libreville for a dedicated working and friendship mission.
This diplomatic and judicial rapprochement reflects the strong relationship between Gabon’s Head of State, Brice Clotaire Oligui Nguema, and Togo’s President, Faure Essozimna Gnassingbé. Both leaders share a unified vision regarding various regional and international challenges currently facing the continent.
The heads of both jurisdictions emphasized that this alliance is crucial for addressing contemporary and future hurdles. Constitutional justice must now adapt to the requirements of an intergenerational society while ensuring the protection of the dignity, rights, and liberties of future citizens.
“The exchange between our Courts serves more than just our institutions; it serves all of Africa. This is no longer merely a matter of constitutional etiquette but a vital necessity for anchoring the Rule of Law across our continent,” stated Dieudonné Aba’a Owono. He expressed hope that this visit marks the beginning of a sustained partnership where constitutional judges from both nations can collaborate on shared legal reflections and jurisprudence.
Professor Djobo-Babakane Coulibaley echoed these sentiments, highlighting the importance of the initiative. “In an era marked by global instability where the prestige of the Rule of Law is often challenged, the dialogue between our courts allows us to reaffirm our shared commitment to these fundamental values,” he remarked. The Togolese delegation’s stay in the Gabonese capital is scheduled to conclude this Wednesday.
