Gabon unveiled its ambitious industrial transition strategy at the prestigious Boao Forum, hosted in Perth, Australia. During a dedicated panel focusing on growth drivers within the green industry sector, Hermann Immongault, the Vice-President of the Government (VPG), detailed the nation’s strategic direction to a diverse audience of investors, public officials, and economic partners.
His presentation underscored a comprehensive strategy built upon the local processing of resources, fostering local content, driving innovation, and securing financial cooperation to cultivate a resilient and competitive sustainable economy.
Leveraging Gabon’s abundant forests, strategic mineral deposits, and significant energy potential, Hermann Immongault advocated for the establishment of robust, integrated value chains. He emphatically stated, ”Gabon aspires to be more than just a raw materials supplier. Our goal is to forge complete value chains.” Furthermore, he championed an industrialization model designed to generate employment and foster opportunities for domestic businesses, Gabonese workers, and local communities.
The VPG highlighted the Nkok Special Economic Zone, managed by GSEZ, as a prime example. This zone stands as Africa’s first industrial area to achieve carbon-neutral certification under ISO 14064-1. Its operational framework is centered on repurposing wood residues and recycling plastics and used tires. Immongault also drew attention to the Belinga project, a collaborative effort with the Australian firm Fortescue, aimed at developing a pioneering ‘green iron’ industry.
Discussions ultimately turned to the crucial aspect of funding this transformative shift. Hermann Immongault urged for stronger international partnerships to secure increased green financing, emphasizing the importance of simultaneously safeguarding the interests of local riparian populations.
