The President of the Republic, Brice Clotaire Oligui Nguema, received in Libreville a joint mission of the Union of African States (UA) and the United Nations (UN), led by Mohamed Idrissa Farah and Parfait Onanga-Anyanga. This meeting, held within the framework of Madagascar’s institutional refounding process, aimed to draw inspiration from Gabon’s experience in political transition, constitutional return, and institutional reforms.
During the exchanges, the head of state presented the main lessons of Gabon’s transition, emphasizing a democratic approach based on inclusiveness, respect for the transition calendar, organization of a national dialogue, and preservation of peace, social cohesion, and national unity. According to the Presidency, these principles enabled the organization of ‘free, transparent, and credible’ elections, consecrating the return to constitutional order and restoring institutions.
By choosing Libreville as the venue for this exchange mission, the two African and international organizations reaffirmed their willingness to share best practices in governance, stability, and democratic institution consolidation on the continent.
The Gabonese transition, initiated after the events of August 30, 2023, concluded with the adoption of a new Constitution, organization of an inclusive national dialogue, and holding of several elections marking the return to constitutional order. Since then, the Gabonese authorities have presented this experience as a model of peaceful transition, regularly invoked in discussions with various African and international partners.
