The Malian Ministry of Health and Social Development recently took delivery of 39 robust 4×4 all-terrain vehicles. This significant acquisition, which occurred on Thursday, February 5, 2026, is set to invigorate the nation’s health infrastructure and broaden access to crucial medical services, particularly immunization, across Mali’s most susceptible areas. The official handover ceremony was conducted at the Ministry of Health’s headquarters within Bamako’s Cité administrative.
These vehicles represent an investment of 689 million CFA francs. According to Minister of Health, Assa Badiallo Touré, this equipment is the fruit of a robust and productive collaboration between her ministry and Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance. The Minister emphasized that “this delivery is neither the first nor will it be the last,” recalling that in 2023, 68 vehicles were procured with World Bank funding to bolster COVID-19 vaccination efforts. She also indicated that additional essential equipment is anticipated later in 2026.
“These new vehicles will significantly bolster the operational capacities of our healthcare facilities in overseeing health interventions, particularly those focused on vaccination,” the Minister stated during her address. She urged beneficiaries and drivers to ensure diligent maintenance of the vehicles, stressing the critical importance of preserving this equipment, especially given current constraints, as the ministry continues its efforts to expand its service vehicle fleet.
Speaking on behalf of the technical and financial partners, UNICEF’s Representative in Mali, Fosca Giulidori, underscored the profound symbolic meaning of the event. “Far more than a mere transfer of keys, this occasion signifies a powerful act of international solidarity, embodying Gavi’s unwavering commitment to accelerating global vaccination efforts and ensuring fair access to vaccines for all,” she articulated.
Fosca Giulidori further explained that these 39 vehicles serve as critical lifelines for the health system. They will facilitate the transportation of vaccines and other medical essentials, strictly adhering to standards, to the most isolated health centers. Furthermore, they will enable the deployment of mobile health teams to communities that are otherwise difficult to reach, thereby strengthening immunization activities, nutritional monitoring, and other vital care for the benefit of the population.
