The Malian Armed Forces (FAMA) have declared they have regained the initiative and secured critical zones targeted by coordinated attacks from the National Movement for the Liberation of Azawad (MNLA) in the northern regions and the Support Group for Islam and Muslims (JNIM), an Al-Qaeda affiliate operating in central and southern Mali.
Intensified clashes and strategic reinforcements
In a recent official statement, the FAMA confirmed that heavy fighting resumed on Sunday near Anifif, a strategic location situated 110 kilometers south of Kidal. The clashes followed the arrival of additional fighters and military equipment dispatched to reinforce the MNLA’s positions in the area.
Highlighting their resilience, the army emphasized, « These attempts to destabilize our nation have only strengthened our resolve. Our troops fought with unwavering determination and discipline throughout the day, demonstrating their unwavering commitment to protecting Mali’s sovereignty and safeguarding its people. »

The FAMA reaffirmed their full confidence in the military’s capacity to defend the nation’s unity, preserve its territorial integrity, and defeat hostile forces. In a related development, Mohamed Mouloud Ramadan, spokesperson for the MNLA, had previously asserted that the group maintained control over Anifif following the resumption of hostilities. He also categorically denied reports of the death of the MNLA’s leader, Mbarek Ag Akli, insisting that the commander remains actively involved in directing military operations across northern Mali.
