Chahana Takiou, the director of the Malian biweekly publication “22 septembre,” was taken into custody on Monday afternoon after appearing before the prosecutor for the specialized unit against cybercrime. This legal action follows a public statement he made against the military authorities during the Pan-African Media Forum, which took place in Bamako from June 3 to 6.
Charges and upcoming trial
Judicial officials have confirmed that Takiou is currently being held under a committal order. He is accused of “undermining the credit of the State through the judicial institution.” His trial has been set for July 27, marking a significant escalation in the legal pressure facing local media figures.
Family members of the journalist have also verified that he is indeed being detained following his summons.
A challenge to the legal system
The controversy stems from remarks Takiou made during a forum panel featuring Idrissa Hamidou Touré, a prosecutor from a Bamako court. During the session, the journalist voiced his frustration with the current political climate, stating that there is no genuine effort toward peace in Mali. He specifically criticized the authorities for bypassing press laws to target journalists using cybercrime legislation instead.
Outcry from media organizations
The Maison de la Presse in Mali released a statement expressing deep concern and confusion regarding the incarceration. The organization, representing various professional media bodies, issued a firm condemnation of the detention order.
According to the group, this legal move severely damages the reputation of the Malian justice system and the country as a whole. They described the arrest as a transparent and grave violation of the fundamental rights to freedom of opinion and the press.
