In a landmark address delivered at Koulouba on May 27, 2026, following the Eid al-Adha prayers held at the presidential palace in Bamako, Malian transitional leader General Assimi Goïta expanded the national definition of terrorism to encompass media narratives, economic pressures, political interference, and international influences. The ceremony, traditionally held at the Great Mosque of Bagadadji, was relocated to the banquet hall of the presidential palace for security reasons.
Imam Mahmoud Touré, leading prayers at the presidential mosque, invoked divine blessings for peace and stability in Mali. The unusual venue underscored the heightened security concerns in Bamako, reflecting the evolving threats facing the nation.
Confronting ‘multifaceted terrorism’
Addressing senior government officials, diplomats, and military leaders, General Goïta declared that Mali is now facing what he termed ‘multifaceted terrorism.’ He emphasized that threats no longer originate solely from armed groups but also from manipulated narratives in the media, economic coercion, and foreign political interference. ‘No amount of disinformation will weaken the Malian people’s resolve for peace and sovereignty’, he asserted, calling for unwavering national unity.
The head of state reaffirmed his government’s commitment to the Mali Kura national refoundation project and pledged continued military operations alongside allied forces until the country achieves complete pacification. The transition government has intensified calls for national cohesion in the aftermath of recent attacks.
Military operations intensify after coordinated assaults
This address follows a joint offensive by the Group for the Support of Islam and Muslims (GSIM) and the Azavad Liberation Front (FLA) on April 25, 2026, which resulted in the death of Defense Minister Sadio Camara and targeted multiple Malian positions. Since then, Malian Armed Forces (FAMA) and the Africa Corps have escalated aerial and ground operations in the regions of Ségou, Kidal, and Ménaka to restore security.
