The Kingdom of Morocco is actively participating in the second Political Conference on the nexus of peace, security, and development, taking place on July 11 and 12 in Mombasa, Kenya.
This significant conference builds upon the foundations laid by the inaugural Political Conference on the peace, security, and development nexus, which convened in Tanger from October 25 to 27, 2022. That initial gathering culminated in the adoption of the landmark Tanger Declaration. This declaration established a comprehensive African vision for the nexus, emphasizing the critical need for coordinated public policies, stronger partnerships, and the implementation of tangible projects designed to foster lasting peace, enhanced security, and sustainable development across the continent.
On a continental scale, the Tanger Process has firmly established itself as the premier platform for constructive dialogue concerning the intricate interdependence between peace, security, and development within Africa. It brings together key continental and international stakeholders committed to this vital domain, including the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa, the United Nations Development Programme, the African Export-Import Bank, and the African Development Bank.
The current second conference aims to critically assess the progress achieved in operationalizing the Tanger Declaration. Furthermore, it seeks to identify and refine practical, actionable strategies to further strengthen the crucial link between peace, security, and development throughout Africa.
Discussions at the conference are structured around five focused panels. These sessions delve into various critical topics, notably the practical implementation of the Tanger Declaration through thematic projects, the transformative role of artificial intelligence and youth-led innovations, the strategic balance between security expenditures and development investments, the effective mobilization of financing for Nexus projects, and invaluable lessons gleaned from the African Union’s support for complex political transitions.
Representing the Kingdom, the Moroccan delegation, led by Ambassador Mohamed Arrouchi, Permanent Representative to the African Union and the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa, is highlighting Morocco’s forward-thinking vision. This vision advocates for an integrated approach to peace, security, and development, underpinned by robust partnerships and the promotion of African-centric solutions that are specifically tailored to address the continent’s unique priorities and realities.
