The Nigerian army announced on Sunday that it had freed 360 people abducted by Boko Haram in southern Borno state, northeastern Nigeria.

The operation took place in the Mandara mountains, a stronghold of the terrorist group, the army said. Abuja is ramping up pressure on jihadists — last month, Nigerian authorities reported that a joint operation with the United States eliminated 175 ISWAP fighters.

Nigeria faces a severe security crisis, especially in the north, where over a decade of jihadist insurgency, combined with rising ransom kidnappings and illegal mining, continues to destabilise the region.

The conflict in northeastern Nigeria has killed thousands and forced millions to flee their homes. President Bola Tinubu has repeatedly pledged to end the insecurity, but many analysts believe the measures taken so far are insufficient to protect the population.
