Advancing transparency through constitutional updates

The President of the National Assembly, Ousmane Sonko, has described the constitutional reform recently adopted by the parliamentary majority as a vital instrument for consolidating Sénégal‘s democratic framework. This legislative change is essential for refining public management and fostering a culture of transparency across the state.

Presiding over the plenary session dedicated to bill no. 17/2026, a proposal originating from the Pastef-Les patriotes parliamentary group, Ousmane Sonko emphasized that this reform allows the country to make significant strides in its political evolution. The approved text has already been transmitted to the Head of State for the final steps in the legal process.

A milestone for democratic governance

In his address, the head of the parliament indicated that he would request the President of the Republic to proceed with the simple promulgation of the law. He pointed out that the Conseil constitutionnel, whose rulings are binding for all administrative and political authorities, effectively validates both the adoption and approval of the measure. This vote officially marks the conclusion of the procedural journey for this significant legislative text.

Ousmane Sonko also took a moment to trace the history of this revision process, noting that the integrated amendments reflect years of political engagement and advocacy. Although the national dialogue was not a formal institutional body, it provided a platform for various political parties and civil society organizations to contribute to the reform’s development, ensuring it reflects broad consensus.

Commitment to public accountability

The parliamentary leader extended his congratulations to the deputies who championed the revision, noting its strict alignment with the outcomes of the national dialogue. Beyond the legislative changes, Ousmane Sonko reaffirmed his personal commitment to transparency regarding his own finances and public standing.

The former Prime Minister announced that he would be submitting a new asset declaration in the coming days. Having already fulfilled this requirement when he took office, he is now preparing the mandatory exit declaration following his transition from the head of government. “I will make this declaration next week,” he confirmed, highlighting his continued adherence to rigorous integrity standards.
