Sénégal adopts key electoral code reforms under President Bassirou Diomaye Faye
The President of the Republic, Bassirou Diomaye Faye, has officially promulgated the revised articles L29 and L30 of the electoral code, marking a decisive step in the country’s electoral framework modernization. This move follows a second parliamentary review, underscoring its significance for upcoming elections in Sénégal.

Earlier this month, the electoral code amendments faced a procedural hurdle when the President requested corrections to “material errors” in the text. The National Assembly responded swiftly by reconvening and adopting the revised version on May 11, 2025, through an expedited legislative process.
Contrary to circulating claims about a May 13 deadline for promulgation, legal experts confirmed that constitutional timelines remained intact, leaving ample room for the President’s final validation.
Electoral code overhaul gains momentum
These amendments represent a cornerstone in the ongoing electoral reforms reshaping Sénégal’s voting landscape. Articles L29 and L30 specifically address eligibility criteria and the operational framework of electoral processes, ensuring greater transparency and fairness in future polls.
With the President’s signature now affixed to the revised text, the updated provisions have entered into force, cementing the legislative framework for upcoming elections.
