Local elections in Senegal: Political tensions rise over poll timing
Ousmane Sonko, leader of the Pastef party, has intensified pressure on President Bassirou Diomaye Faye regarding the scheduling of upcoming local elections. During a campaign stop in Louga on Saturday, where Pastef members were distributing voter registration cards, Sonko directly addressed President Faye, questioning the delayed announcement of the election date.
In front of a highly mobilized crowd of supporters, Sonko emphasized the president’s authority to issue decrees, citing recent dismissals of public officials as examples of executive action. He argued that fixing an election date is equally within the president’s powers and should be done without further delay.
Opposition to election postponement
Sonko has been vocal in his rejection of any postponement of the local elections. His remarks in Louga underscored the urgency of clarifying the electoral calendar, warning that uncertainty could be exploited politically. He suggested that the lack of a fixed date might stem from fears within the administration of Pastef’s growing momentum and grassroots mobilization.
The debate over the election date continues to dominate political discussions in Senegal. With various stakeholders awaiting official confirmation, the call for transparency in the electoral process remains a central issue.
