The spiritual leader of Senegal’s Mouride brotherhood has issued a renewed call for national peace and unity just months before the highly anticipated Grand Magal of Touba in 2026.
An historic gathering ahead of the Grand Magal
The Grand Magal of Touba, marking the 133rd anniversary of the exile of Cheikh Ahmadou Bamba, founder of the Mouride order, will take place on Sunday, 2 August 2026. In a gesture of respect and reflection, Ousmane Sonko, President of the National Assembly, made a courtesy visit to the holy city of Touba on Thursday, 30 July, to meet the Khalife général des Mourides, Serigne Mountakha Mbacké.
During the meeting, Sonko conveyed his deepest respects to the spiritual leader, emphasizing the profound spiritual and historical significance of the upcoming pilgrimage. He highlighted the enduring values of faith, perseverance, work, and peace that the Grand Magal embodies.
A shared vision for peace and national cohesion
In response, Serigne Mountakha Mbacké reaffirmed his long-standing appeal for peace, unity, and social cohesion across Senegal. He also offered prayers for Sonko’s well-being and for the continued prosperity of the nation.
