How can university research better address the country’s pressing needs? This critical question brought together the leaders of Togo’s UNESCO university chairs in Lomé on July 9, 2026. Organized by the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research, the gathering provided an opportunity to assess ongoing initiatives and chart a new strategic path to amplify the role of scientific research in national development.

UNESCO chairs unite for greater research alignment with national priorities

At the heart of the discussions was a shared vision for the future of scientific research in Togo. Chaired by the Minister Delegate for Higher Education and Scientific Research, Professor Gado Tchangbedji, the meeting convened representatives from the National Commission for UNESCO and leaders of the country’s public university UNESCO chairs. These include the UNESCO Chair on Renewable Energies at the University of Lomé, the UNESCO Chair on Women, Science and Sustainable Water Management in West Africa also at the University of Lomé, and the UNESCO Chair on ICT and Higher Education Development in West Africa at the University of Kara.

Transforming research into actionable solutions

The participants conducted a thorough review of each chair’s mandate, completed projects, field challenges, and contributions to national policies. The consensus was clear: these academic structures must play a more central role in tackling Togo’s most pressing challenges—from energy transition and sustainable water use to gender equality and digital transformation in higher education.

Proposals for a stronger, more connected research network

Discussions culminated in concrete recommendations to enhance collaboration. The group proposed the creation of a unified digital platform linking the National Commission for UNESCO with the various chairs. This tool aims to streamline knowledge sharing, coordinate joint activities, and accelerate the implementation of cross-institutional projects. Additionally, participants called for deeper partnerships between universities and for securing new technical and financial allies to support research initiatives.

Government urges research to align with national development goals

Closing the session, Professor Tchangbedji emphasized that scientific research must deliver tangible outcomes that directly support public policy and drive economic and social progress. He stressed that Togo’s future depends on forging stronger synergies between researchers, universities, and national institutions. The minister also expressed hope that this meeting would mark the beginning of a new chapter in strengthening higher education and fostering innovation-driven growth.

Building a more influential scientific ecosystem in Togo

This gathering reflects the government’s commitment to harnessing the intellectual capacity within public universities. By deepening collaboration among UNESCO chairs, fostering strategic partnerships, and aligning research more closely with the country’s development needs, Togo is positioning itself to build a robust scientific ecosystem. The ultimate goal? To transform higher education into a true engine of innovation and sustainable growth.
