The Algerian Minister of State for Hydrocarbons, Mohamed Arkab, engaged in a high-level virtual discussion on Sunday with his Nigerien counterpart, Hamadou Tini. The meeting focused on expanding the strategic partnership between the two nations within the oil and gas industries.

During the session, which included senior officials from both ministries, the participants reviewed the ongoing initiatives of Sonatrach within Niger. Specific attention was given to the Kafra oil field, following the landmark memorandum of understanding established on March 24, 2026. This agreement was originally formalized during the second session of the Great Algerian-Nigerien Joint Commission, headed by Prime Ministers Sifi Ghrieb and Ali Lamine Zeine.

The dialogue provided a platform to assess the current status of exploration and development at the Kafra block. Furthermore, the ministers evaluated the collaborative efforts between Sonatrach International Production and Exploration Corporation (SIPEX) and the Nigerien Petroleum Company (SONIDEP).

A central theme of the talks was the integration of local Niger businesses into major energy projects. Both parties emphasized that fostering local content is essential for driving economic progress and ensuring that energy developments directly benefit the people of Niger.

The roadmap for future cooperation also encompasses human resource development and technical exchange. Plans are in motion to organize specialized training programs for engineers and technicians. Additionally, the partnership aims to strengthen ties between national entities such as Sonatrach, SONIDEP, and Naftal, particularly in the critical areas of fuel transport, storage infrastructure, and the securing of petroleum supply chains.

Concluding the meeting, the two ministers reaffirmed their dedication to deepening bilateral relations. They pledged to finalize agreed-upon projects to enhance regional energy integration and stimulate sustainable economic growth for both Algeria and Niger.
