During a recent briefing held by the Diomaye Président coalition, Minister Abdourahmane Diouf delivered a stern message regarding the ongoing debate over constitutional changes. He emphasized that as long as Bassirou Diomaye Faye remains the Head of State, the stability of Sénégal is non-negotiable. Diouf reminded the public that the President had already pledged in 2024 to protect institutional integrity and social harmony.
Accusations of betrayal and political maneuvering
The Minister did not hold back when discussing the 2024 electoral period. He pointed out that Ousmane Sonko had initially leaned toward delaying the presidential vote before eventually backing Bassirou Diomaye Faye. However, Diouf now perceives a sharp shift in Sonko’s stance, accusing the President of the National Assembly of “betraying” the Head of State. He characterized Sonko’s current approach to institutional reforms as nothing more than “political manipulation.”
A critique of institutional changes
Furthermore, Abdourahmane Diouf highlighted that previous leaders, despite holding parliamentary majorities, refrained from altering the Constitution in the manner currently being proposed. He argued that if such tactics had been employed in the past, today’s political figures would not even be in a position to advocate for the reforms they are currently pushing.
The critique reached a peak when Diouf addressed Sonko’s self-styled image as a “guardian of the revolution.” He argued that such a persona is entirely at odds with the responsibilities of leading the National Assembly. Dismissing Sonko’s influence with a sharp jab, Diouf stated that the nation has no use for a “quack guide” leading them astray.
