Algeria’s Sonelgaz begins 40 MW power plant project in Chad’s capital
An Algerian delegation from Sonelgaz has arrived in N’Djamena to initiate the construction of a new 40 MW electric power plant in Chad. This initiative aligns with President Abdelmadjid Tebboune’s vision to strengthen African cooperation and foster South-South strategic partnerships, particularly with Chad. The move follows the official visit of Chadian President Mahamat Idriss Déby Itno to Algeria from April 22 to 24.
The delegation, led by Mr. Yazid Djellouli, CEO of Sonelgaz-International, was received by the Managing Director of Tchad-Elec (Chad Electricity Company) in a meeting attended by Algeria’s Ambassador to Chad and key officials from Chad’s Ministry of Energy. High-level discussions continued with Tahir Hamid Nguilin, Chad’s Minister of State for Finance, Budget, Economy, Planning, and International Cooperation, and Passalé Kanabé Marcelin, Chad’s Minister of Water and Energy. These meetings underscored the strategic importance of this project in enhancing economic and energy cooperation between the two nations.
During their visit, the Algerian team engaged in technical and regulatory discussions with Tchad-Elec representatives. The agenda included defining priorities for the preparatory phase, establishing coordination mechanisms, and drafting a joint roadmap. The teams also focused on forming bilateral working groups to ensure seamless collaboration before conducting site inspections for the future power plant.
The delegation’s primary objectives include assessing existing infrastructure, evaluating grid connection feasibility, and verifying compliance with technical and regulatory standards. These efforts aim to lay the groundwork for the power plant’s construction, ensuring adherence to the highest standards of quality and efficiency.
This project reflects the shared commitment of Algeria and Chad to build a sustainable energy partnership. It also highlights Sonelgaz’s dedication to supporting African partners through a comprehensive approach that emphasizes expertise transfer, technical capacity building, and practical solutions tailored to Africa’s energy development needs.
