As coastal and maritime challenges intensify across the Gulf of Guinea, Benin has taken a decisive step forward in oceanic expertise. Through the OPERA project (Ocean Prediction Enhancement in Regions of Africa), an international training initiative focused on ocean forecasting has just concluded, drawing nearly 1,200 participants from around the world. This online program (MOOC) not only showcases the country’s academic excellence but also solidifies its role in shaping global marine research.
Benin at the forefront of Africa’s oceanic research
The initiative, spearheaded nationally by the UNESCO Chair / CIPMA at the University of Abomey-Calavi (UAC), ran for seven weeks and united learners from 111 countries. With 1,162 registered participants, Benin emerged as the most represented nation, highlighting the strong engagement of its academics, students, and environmental managers in cutting-edge marine science.
Dr. Frédéric Bonou, researcher and lecturer at UAC, emphasized the practical impact of the program:
The beauty of this training lies in its hands-on approach. Every module was designed to bridge theory with real-world challenges—whether for coastal fishermen, environmental managers, or marine scientists. The goal is to empower learners with actionable knowledge to address pressing local issues.
Equipping Benin’s future with advanced marine tools
Over 21 hours of interactive sessions, participants delved into satellite observation technologies, Argo floats, and sophisticated numerical models. The focus? Building immediate, deployable skills for Benin’s coastal and maritime sectors, including:
- Coastal erosion prevention: Anticipating wave patterns and tidal dynamics to safeguard the country’s vulnerable shoreline.
- Sustainable fisheries management: Mapping and predicting high-yield fishing zones to protect marine biodiversity.
- Maritime security: Enhancing surveillance of Benin’s territorial waters and mitigating pollution risks.
A select group of 500 learners received tailored mentorship, culminating in an academic certification co-delivered by the UNESCO Chair at UAC and Toulouse University.
A strategic alliance backed by the European Union
The program’s success stems from a robust partnership between the University of Abomey-Calavi, the Gulf of Guinea Ocean Sciences Summer School (GGOSSS), and Mercator Ocean International. Financially supported by the European Union under the Arc X / Global Gateway initiative, this collaboration underscores Benin’s commitment to harnessing ocean science as a driver of sustainable development and maritime sovereignty.
By positioning its youth and volunteer researchers at the heart of an international expert network—spanning Benin, France, the United States, and Spain—Benin is not only addressing immediate coastal challenges but also investing in long-term scientific leadership for the region.
