Eight weeks have passed since Cameroonian President Paul Biya departed for what was announced as a “short private stay in Europe.” Now 93 years old, the head of state’s continued absence from the nation inadvertently intensifies questions regarding his capacity to lead. The official silence from authorities only serves to fuel widespread speculation, particularly within an already uncertain post-presidential political landscape.
In Yaoundé, the government is actively working to de-escalate the controversy. Various officials affirm that President Paul Biya continues to fulfill his duties remotely, emphasizing that no constitutional provision restricts the duration of a presidential visit abroad. According to these authorities, there is no existing power vacuum or institutional crisis, asserting that state affairs are proceeding as usual.
However, this official narrative struggles to convince the opposition. The Mouvement pour la renaissance du Cameroun (MRC), led by Maurice Kamto, decries a significant lack of transparency. The MRC maintains that the people of Cameroon are entitled to clear information regarding the president’s health status and his ability to fully exercise his responsibilities. For the party’s leadership, the secrecy surrounding the European trip only amplifies public concerns rather than alleviating them.
Other opposition figures adopt a more institutional perspective. Cabral Libii, president of the PCRN, suggests that the true issue lies not so much in the head of state’s absence, but rather in the inherent weaknesses of the legal framework governing the exercise of power. In his view, the legislative and municipal elections scheduled for early 2027 could present a crucial opportunity for comprehensive institutional reform.
With just eight months remaining until the commencement of Paul Biya’s new presidential term, this prolonged absence has reignited a long-standing national dialogue concerning governance, presidential succession, and the urgent need for greater transparency at the highest levels of state. More than a mere dispute over a presidential journey, it profoundly underscores the vulnerabilities within a political system that has been largely structured around a single individual who has held power for over four decades.
