Government rejects UN allegations amid ongoing counterterrorism efforts
The Chadian government has vehemently denied accusations from the United Nations Human Rights Office regarding civilian casualties in military strikes against Boko Haram positions in the Lake Chad Basin. Addressing the press in N’Djamena, Government Spokesperson and Minister of Communication Gassim Chérif Mahamat dismissed the claims as unfounded.
In a press briefing, the spokesperson condemned what he called “attempts to undermine the credibility of the Chadian armed forces”, asserting that such allegations tarnish the nation’s military reputation. He emphasized that Chad’s military remains fully committed to combating terrorism across the Sahel and the Lake Chad region—a volatile area plagued by recurring armed group attacks for years.
The government maintained that military operations are conducted with strict adherence to international humanitarian law. Authorities insisted that every precaution is taken to minimize collateral damage and protect civilians during airstrikes targeting Boko Haram strongholds.
Controversy over UN human rights report
The rebuttal follows the release of a UN human rights report suggesting significant civilian losses from recent aerial operations by Chadian forces in the region. The document reignited debates over the conduct of military operations in this highly sensitive zone, where clashes between security forces and armed groups persist.
N’Djamena strongly contested the report’s findings, arguing that they lack sufficient evidence. Instead, the government highlighted the pivotal role of its defense and security forces in stabilizing the region, positioning them as frontline defenders against terrorist threats.
The authorities called for a “balanced and responsible assessment” of the security situation and reiterated their commitment to safeguarding civilian lives. They also urged for strengthened international cooperation to better coordinate efforts against extremist groups active in the Lake Chad Basin.
Despite diplomatic tensions, Chadian officials affirmed their resolve to continue operations against Boko Haram while defending the legitimacy and professionalism of their military in an increasingly complex security landscape.
