Chad opposition denounces politically motivated justice system

N’Djaména, Chad — The political landscape in Chad has reached a boiling point as the opposition party Les Patriotes (The Patriots) holds a press conference to denounce what they call a manipulated judicial system following the recent sentencing of eight leaders from the GCAP coalition (Group for Political Actors’ Consultation).

Chad opposition denounces politically motivated justice system

Mounting political and security crises fuel accusations of judicial bias

Speaking from his party’s headquarters in Bololo, N’Djaména, Hisseine Abdoulaye, spokesperson for Les Patriotes, delivered a scathing critique of Chad’s current political and security climate. He condemned the eight-year prison sentences handed down to eight GCAP leaders, labeling the verdicts as part of a broader strategy to silence dissent and weaken opposition forces.

The party painted a grim picture of Chad’s deteriorating situation, highlighting escalating insecurity in the Lake Chad basin, where Boko Haram’s relentless attacks on government forces have intensified. Communal violence in the eastern region, particularly in Wadi Fira, has further destabilized the country, resulting in dozens of fatalities. These crises, according to Les Patriotes, expose critical vulnerabilities in Chad’s national security framework and deepen the climate of instability.

Accusations of authoritarian crackdown target opposition voices

Les Patriotes accused authorities of imposing an authoritarian grip on power, pointing to incidents such as the killing of Yaya Dillo, the imprisonment of Succès Masra, and the recent sentencing of the eight GCAP leaders. These actions, the party argued, are designed to stifle dissent and dismantle political opposition.

The rapid pace of the judicial proceedings against the GCAP leaders raised further suspicions. The party alleged that the Office of the Public Prosecutor, the Ministry of Territorial Administration, and the Supreme Court had colluded to orchestrate a politically motivated campaign aimed at neutralizing the dissolved coalition.

Political opponents reject charges as baseless and fabricated

Les Patriotes vehemently contested the charges brought against the condemned leaders, including accusations of illegal assembly, criminal conspiracy, insurrection, rebellion, and unauthorized weapons possession. The party dismissed these claims as lacking credible evidence, labeling some of the alleged offenses as fabricated to justify the prosecutions.

In their appeal to the international community, human rights organizations, and advocates of the rule of law, the party demanded the immediate and unconditional release of the eight imprisoned leaders and all political detainees. They also called for sustained scrutiny of the case to ensure justice is served.

Call for national unity amid escalating tensions

Concluding the press conference, Les Patriotes urged citizens to rally behind the principles of dialogue, unity, and democracy. The party emphasized the urgent need to prevent further political and security deterioration in Chad, warning that unaddressed grievances could plunge the nation deeper into crisis.
