Coalition expresses support for electoral framework overhaul
In a significant move for the nation’s democratic landscape, the Alliance des Ivoiriens pour la démocratie (AID) and the Union des masses populaires pour la paix (UMPP) have publicly endorsed the government’s initiative to restructure electoral management. This shift is seen as a direct response to the concerns raised by various political entities and civil society groups across Côte d’Ivoire.
Spokesperson Zadi Djédjé shared the group’s perspective following a high-level briefing at the Primature, which was led by Prime Minister Robert Beugré Mambé. The discussions focused on the future of the body responsible for managing national polls.
A new era for Ivorian elections
The dissolution of the previous commission, whose members had reached the end of their terms, marks the beginning of a revamped governance model. The AID-UMPP alliance views this transition as a vital step toward fulfilling years of advocacy for a more robust system. By establishing a new architecture, the government aims to turn a page in the country’s history, prioritizing transparency and the restoration of trust between all stakeholders.
The proposed reform introduces a specialized three-organ system designed to handle different aspects of the process:
- Logistical organization of the voting process.
- Tabulation and counting of ballots.
- General supervision to ensure the integrity of the entire cycle.
Fostering stability and democratic growth
By focusing on professionalization and neutrality, this new framework is expected to minimize the risk of pre- and post-electoral tensions. The coalition believes that these principles will strengthen the credibility of future votes and solidify institutional stability within Côte d’Ivoire.
Leaders of the AID-UMPP have called upon political parties, community leaders, and civil society to approach these changes with a spirit of patriotism and constructive dialogue. They emphasized that respecting national institutions is a cornerstone of a healthy democracy and essential for maintaining long-term peace.
