The Ligue 1 clash between Nantes and Toulouse in the 34th matchday was halted after just 20 minutes of play when supporters descended into chaos.
A nightmare evening unfolded at Stade de la Beaujoire on Sunday as the final Ligue 1 fixture between Nantes and Toulouse was suspended following disturbances. Fans from the Tribune Loire stand launched smoke bombs onto the pitch and invaded the playing surface just minutes into the match.
With Nantes already relegated to Ligue 2, tensions were running high among the home supporters. The deployment of around 100 riot police units failed to prevent the escalation as the crowd turned violent. Some spectators were even seen urging family members outside the stadium to leave immediately.
Referee Stéphanie Frappart quickly ordered both teams into the dressing rooms as chaos erupted. The only coach to remain on the pitch was Vahid Halilhodzic, who was in charge of his final match before retirement at 74 years old. Deeply affected by the unfolding events, Halilhodzic attempted to confront the pitch invaders before being restrained by stewards.
Earlier in the match, Halilhodzic had been the only coach publicly supported by the Brigade Loire ultras group. Moved to tears, he had greeted the Tribune Loire stand before the disturbances began just minutes later.
After roughly 10 minutes of clashes, riot police attempted to enter the Tribune Loire stand but were met with fierce resistance from masked leaders. Violence intensified as seats were ripped from the stands and thrown at police officers while stunned spectators looked on.
Halilhodzic returned to the pitchside area after about 10 minutes and offered to confront the supporters directly. “It’s too dangerous, they’re fighting each other”, he was warned. “But what are they going to do?” the Nantes coach replied.
A crisis cell was reportedly convened between Ligue 1 officials and public authorities to determine the match’s fate. As of 21:45 local time, the fixture had still not resumed, with strong indications pointing toward an abandonment of the game.
