A strategic alliance between Cameroon Water Utilities (CAMWATER) and the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) was formalized on June 30, 2026, in Yaoundé, aimed at securing long-term drinking water supplies for displaced persons and local residents in the Far North region.

In a significant move to support vulnerable populations, CAMWATER and UNHCR have strengthened their operational ties. The two organizations entered into a partnership agreement this Tuesday, June 30, 2026, specifically targeting the improvement of potable water infrastructure serving the Minawao refugee camp and its surrounding areas in the Far North.

The document was signed by Dr. Blaise Moussa, Director General of CAMWATER, and Ms. Yvette Muhimpundu, the UNHCR representative in Cameroon. This initiative is part of the broader “Alternative Solutions for Minawao Camp” project, which receives vital backing from the European Union, the German Cooperation (GIZ), and UNHCR.

Under the terms of this collaboration, CAMWATER will deploy its technical proficiency in the design, execution, and oversight of water supply systems. Simultaneously, UNHCR remains dedicated to safeguarding refugees and building their resilience, working in close coordination with the government of Cameroon.

The shared objective is to elevate the living standards of both refugees and host communities. By addressing the mounting demographic pressure, the partnership seeks to establish a sustainable model for water resource management in the region.
