French embassy officials in Yaoundé have raised concerns over a surge in irregularities in student visa applications from Cameroon. Muriel Piquet-Viaux, deputy director of cooperation and cultural action, highlighted multiple fraudulent practices detected in applications for private French institutions.

«Fraud is a serious issue», she stated, listing examples such as false certificates, fabricated financial statements, incorrect identity documents, and deceptive proof of blocked funds.

In response, consular authorities have significantly enhanced verification protocols. «We now have a dedicated team thoroughly examining each document», Piquet-Viaux explained.

Stricter financial requirements introduced

The embassy attributes these irregularities to new financial prerequisites for Cameroonian students seeking visas for private French schools. Applicants must now demonstrate full tuition payment or equivalent funds before visa approval.

For students who had already paid partial fees in France, outcomes vary. «It depends on the institution where the funds were deposited», Piquet-Viaux noted. «Now, we require funds to be held in a blocked account. Once the visa is granted and the student is admitted, the amount is released».

Cameroon faces unique visa restrictions

Cameroon remains the sole African nation subject to these heightened measures for student mobility to France. The policy has sparked widespread criticism among affected families.
