Gabon and TikTok strengthen digital partnership for safer social media
After months of regulatory tension, Gabon and TikTok have shifted toward constructive dialogue to align with the country’s evolving digital laws. The breakthrough came during a strategic meeting at the AI for Good / WSIS Global Summit in Geneva, where Gabon’s Minister of Digital Economy, Mark-Alexandre Doumba, engaged with TikTok’s regional leadership to assess compliance with Gabon’s updated social media regulations.
This high-level discussion reflects Gabon’s intensified efforts to regulate digital platforms, with a strong emphasis on user safety—especially for minors. The talks centered on governance, content moderation, and TikTok’s commitments to adhere to Gabon’s legal framework, ensuring a safer online experience for citizens.
The meeting was led by Emir Gelen, TikTok’s Regional Director for Government Relations in the Middle East, Eurasia, and Africa, alongside Maria Cohn, Deputy Director of Government Affairs. The delegation presented TikTok’s compliance report for the first quarter of 2026, revealing significant progress in content moderation.
TikTok’s moderation efforts yield tangible results
According to TikTok’s data, the platform removed 23,504 sensitive posts in the first three months of 2026 alone. These included:
- 13,930 posts deemed harmful to minors’ safety and well-being
- 10,784 posts promoting regulated goods, services, or activities
Among the most frequently removed content were sexualized materials and accounts involving minors in abusive or exploitative situations. TikTok’s proactive measures ensured that 99.8% of violating content was taken down before users could report it—92.9% were removed before even being viewed.
The platform also reported swift action against problematic content, with 97.2% of flagged posts deleted within 48 hours. Additionally, 4,352 accounts were permanently suspended for violating Gabon’s digital regulations.
Gabon reaffirms commitment to digital safety
Following the productive exchanges, both parties agreed to extend their collaboration for another year—a period aligned with Gabon’s compliance framework under the new social media ordinance. Minister Doumba emphasized the importance of balancing innovation with citizen protection, highlighting Gabon’s focus on combating misinformation, cyberbullying, hate speech, and other threats to young users’ mental health.
The outcome underscores Gabon’s determination to foster a responsible digital ecosystem, ensuring that platforms like TikTok adhere to national laws while prioritizing user safety. This partnership marks a step forward in shaping a more secure and regulated online environment for Gabonese internet users.
