Presnel Kimpembe, a true product of Paris Saint-Germain’s academy, has shared his candid reflections on the final chapter of his time at the club, marked by both triumph and transition. The defender, affectionately known as Titi, recounted how the arrival of a new defensive partner accelerated his decision to move on, despite securing football’s ultimate prize.
In 2024, the club made a decisive move, shelling out €40 million to bring Willian Pacho from Eintracht Frankfurt. The Ecuadorian international arrived in Paris with a clear mission: to partner Marquinhos in central defense. This signing inevitably shifted the dynamics for Kimpembe, a left-footed center-back in direct competition with the incoming talent. The Parisian legend later revealed the moment when manager Luis Enrique broke the news about the impending arrival that would directly impact his role at the club.
Pacho’s arrival hastened Kimpembe’s departure
Speaking with candor, Kimpembe admitted that the situation had become increasingly unsustainable, though he maintained a sense of acceptance about his future. «Heartbreak? No. Not really, because I was already at the end of my journey. I had always given my all to succeed and reach my goals. The circumstances were tough, but that didn’t stop me from pushing forward, trying to return to my best form at the right moment. The story took an incredible turn with that Champions League victory at the end. I would have preferred to leave as a key player on the pitch, but the best way to thank everyone was to depart with that trophy in hand», he shared.
The bittersweet taste of victory
Despite the euphoria of lifting Europe’s premier club competition, Kimpembe confessed to a lingering sense of frustration. «There was so much joy and happiness. Deep down, though, there’s this lingering frustration. I wished I could have been one of the main contributors on the field. I know I played a significant role in the team and the club, but without being on the pitch, it leaves a particular aftertaste», he reflected.
