The Malian government has escalated its fight against terrorism by offering substantial financial rewards for the capture of key figures linked to recent coordinated attacks that have shaken the nation.

Unprecedented attacks spark government response

In late April, jihadist forces from the Group for Support of Islam and Muslims (JNIM), in alliance with the predominantly Tuareg Front for the Liberation of Azawad (FLA), launched a series of large-scale assaults across several Malian regions. These coordinated strikes targeted critical positions held by the Bamako-based military junta, resulting in significant casualties, including the death of Defense Minister Sadio Camara, a central figure in the current regime.

High-profile targets named in bounty announcement

In a televised statement, government officials disclosed rewards for seven individuals accused of orchestrating or facilitating the recent violence. Among the most sought-after are:

  • Iyad Ag Ghaly, the former Tuareg rebel and diplomat turned JNIM leader, remains Mali’s most wanted figure due to his international sanctions and multiple charges including war crimes and crimes against humanity.
  • Amadou Kouffa, another high-ranking JNIM commander, is offered a €2.2 million reward for information leading to his capture.
  • Alghabass Ag Intalla and Bilal Ag Cherif, key FLA leaders, are also named in the government’s bounty list.

The Ministry of Security and Civil Protection emphasized that these rewards are part of a broader strategy to dismantle terrorist networks and restore national stability. Authorities are urging citizens to provide credible, actionable intelligence to aid in the neutralization of these individuals, who are accused of planning and executing attacks that have destabilized the country since 2012.

Ongoing security challenges in Mali

The recent surge in violence underscores the persistent security crisis gripping Mali, fueled by the activities of JNIM, the Islamic State group (IS), and various community-based criminal factions. The government’s decisive measures reflect its commitment to addressing these threats and safeguarding the nation’s future.
