The transfer narrative surrounding Mason Greenwood continues to dominate the summer mercato discussions. Initially linked with a move to AS Roma, the forward, who was reportedly a priority for Gian Piero Gasperini, has now seemingly altered his course and is anticipated to join Fenerbahçe. This unexpected shift has sparked considerable debate within Italy.

Facing pressure to offload players to balance its financial books and reduce its wage bill, OM has been actively seeking a resolution for Mason Greenwood’s future. The latest indications suggest a move to Fenerbahçe, a significant turnaround given his previous strong ties to AS Roma. This development has not gone unnoticed, drawing sharp reactions from Italian football circles.

“This type of negotiation always ends poorly”

Italian journalist Roberto Pruzzo expressed his dissatisfaction with how the negotiations concluded. He remarked that “this type of negotiation always ends poorly. We never truly know if the player genuinely wants to come to Roma, and ultimately, he ends up going to Fenerbahçe. It’s rare for us to say ‘this is the player I want’ and then sign him two hours later.” Adding to this sentiment, his colleague Fernando Orsi commented, “Football doesn’t stop with Greenwood. He doesn’t strike me as a reliable person, and for half the cost, we could find someone suitable for Gasperini. The World Cup serves as a showcase for players.”

Meanwhile, Paolo Marcacci has already begun to consider alternative options to Mason Greenwood. He noted, “Moreira is an excellent player, a profile that perfectly aligns with Gasperini’s philosophy. His market value has risen significantly, partly thanks to the World Cup, but we must observe: this holds true for Nusa, for Garnacho, and for others as well. And then there’s Tresoldi, who had a strong season. Gasperini has the potential to develop Moreira into an even more complete player. Greenwood’s salary is beyond the reach of Italian clubs, despite him foregoing Champions League football.”
