The partnership between Niger and Türkiye reached new heights this week during an official visit to Ankara by Niger’s head of state, General Abdourahamane Tiani. Marking the first overseas trip by the Nigerien leader since assuming office, the visit culminated in the signing of multiple agreements spanning security, economic development, healthcare, education, and diplomatic collaboration.
Key agreements signed to strengthen bilateral relations
Following high-level discussions at the presidential palace, Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Abdourahamane Tiani formalized several cooperation frameworks. Among these was a framework for higher education collaboration covering 2026 to 2030, the establishment of a Joint Economic and Trade Commission (JETCO), an agreement on the management of the Niger-Türkiye Friendship Hospital, and a memorandum of diplomatic cooperation.
Expanding cooperation across vital sectors
President Erdogan highlighted the shared ambition to broaden collaboration in critical areas such as defense, energy, mining, agriculture, trade, and investment. He also announced the creation of a dedicated mechanism to boost business opportunities between Ankara and Niamey, fostering stronger economic ties.
Türkiye’s commitment to Sahel security and regional stability
The Turkish leader reaffirmed his country’s dedication to African nations facing security challenges, particularly in the Sahel region. He emphasized plans to enhance military training and intelligence-sharing initiatives, while underscoring that Türkiye’s African policy is rooted in mutual respect, equitable partnerships, and shared benefits.
President Erdogan also highlighted ongoing contributions in Niger, including the Niger-Türkiye Friendship Hospital, irrigation and rural development initiatives, and educational programs led by the Maarif Foundation. He noted that nearly 500 Nigerien students are currently pursuing higher education in Türkiye.
Niger values Türkiye’s strategic support
In response, Niger’s President Tiani described the relationship as vital for his country’s growth. He recalled how bilateral ties have flourished since Erdogan’s visit to Niger in 2013 and praised Ankara’s backing in the fight against armed groups in the Sahel. According to the Nigerien leader, this cooperation has played a key role in enhancing both security and stability across the region.
