Thousands of citizens took to the streets of Niamey this past Saturday to mark the third anniversary of Niger’s Refoundation, commemorating the 2023 military takeover that reshaped the nation’s political landscape.
The 26 July milestone was hailed by participants as a turning point in Niger’s history, symbolizing the people’s decisive break from thirteen years of governance they described as fractured by repression, social division, and foreign influence.
«This day stands for freedom, for hope, and for a new chapter in governance—one far removed from the constraints we endured for decades», declared Abdoulaye Salifou, a protester present at the demonstration.
«Since the change in leadership, Niger has made remarkable strides, particularly in reclaiming its sovereignty and challenging external dominance. We urge the authorities to stay the course», added Moussa Moumouni, another attendee.
Civil society leader Boubacar Kimba Kollo echoed these sentiments, framing the anniversary as a collective rejection of past injustices and a validation of the current administration’s efforts to restore national unity and dignity.
The festivities also highlighted tangible achievements under the new leadership, though organizers emphasized that the journey toward full Refoundation is ongoing. Participants expressed optimism about the future, emphasizing the need for sustained reforms to solidify Niger’s self-determination and economic resilience.
