The Olympique Lyonnais (OL) made an official request to the Ligue de Football Professionnel (LFP) to postpone their opening Ligue 1 match against Toulouse FC scheduled for August 22. The club sought this adjustment to accommodate potential UEFA Champions League playoff fixtures. However, the LFP declined the proposal.

Lyon faces a congested schedule if they progress in European competitions. The club is set to play a third qualifying round tie, with a first leg on August 4 or 5 and a return on August 11. Should they advance further, midweek playoff matches could overlap with domestic fixtures, creating a logistical challenge. The request mirrors earlier appeals by other clubs such as Paris Saint-Germain and RC Strasbourg during the spring season. Despite these precedents, the LFP maintained its stance against altering the Ligue 1 calendar for its inaugural matchday.

The LFP’s decision was finalized during a Monday evening video conference with its board of directors. The governing body emphasized the importance of maintaining the integrity of the league’s schedule, particularly at the start of the season. Starting next season, all Ligue 1 matches will be exclusively broadcast on Ligue 1+, further reinforcing the league’s structured approach to fixtures.

If Lyon qualifies for the Champions League playoffs, they will need to navigate a demanding schedule, fitting their Ligue 1 opener in Toulouse between European commitments. The club’s management will now focus on preparing for both domestic and international challenges ahead.
