On Monday, June 29, 2026, the National Assembly of Sénégal passed a legislative proposal to revise the Constitution with a significant majority. Despite a boycott of the plenary session by the opposition, the text was approved by the 129 deputies of the Pastef parliamentary majority who were present in the chamber.
Following the legislative vote, the President of the National Assembly, Ousmane Sonko, addressed the growing friction between himself and the President of the Republic, Bassirou Diomaye Faye, regarding specific provisions within the new text.
“We remain hopeful. It is never too late to return to the essentials, to return to what constitutes his political soul. I do not believe he could have changed so much in such a short time,” stated Ousmane Sonko, speaking directly to the Head of State.
Ousmane Sonko specifically highlighted the issue of the President of the Republic’s asset declaration. According to him, the initial draft required a declaration at both the beginning and the conclusion of the presidential term, before certain reservations were introduced.

“He said it himself when he was a candidate: the President of the Republic must declare his assets at the start and at the end of his mandate. The recordings exist. What has changed?” Ousmane Sonko questioned.
He maintains that a commitment made to the people of Sénégal should not be modified to suit changing circumstances.
“Under what authority can a single person allow themselves to pick and choose which provisions suit them and which do not? This is unacceptable,” he declared.
These statements bring to light increasingly visible differences between the two primary figures, despite the fact that they jointly championed the Pastef political project during the presidential election in March 2024.
